I watched the documentary first and then read the book. I can easily say that the book is more detailed and the documentary is surely more entertaining and easier to understand.
The books mainly consist the same things that are said in the documentary. Every different chapter is more detailed as compared to the documentary. One thing that i would suggest is that you should make a list of all the books mentioned in the book and read them too.
There are a few books from the early 1900's that are awesome. I will make a detailed list soon.
